Summary of House Session

While I voted against the gambling bill, I think that we got a number of other good things done in this session. The biggest may be the redistricting plan which has been widely praised for the increase it creates in the number of districts from which minority candidates may potentially be elected.

Last week, I again voted against bringing casinos to Massachusetts. In 2008, when I first voted against gambling, I was voting in the majority.

Thank you very much to State Representative Brownsberger for allowing us to post this to his website.  It is very much appreciated. Support for Brewers request to change Distributor laws *3 comments

Hi Will – just a note to let you know that I support the bill, filed by Rep. John Binienda, of Worcester,  that would exempt small brewers from the laws protecting wholesalers in MA. The law was written at a time when there were only two or three brewers in the market. Since that time, [...]

Massachusetts Alimony Reform 2011: Big Changes? *1 comment

The matter of alimony is almost invariably a highly emotional and contentious issue for all parties involved, however the current state of Massachusetts alimony laws is rather antiquated and leaves much to be desired. A new bill currently making its way through the Massachusetts legislature with a large amount of momentum would radically reform these [...]

Transgender Civil Rights Bill *1 comment

Dear Rep. Brownsberger, We note that the Transgender Civil Right Bill will be coming up shortly for a vote.  When it comes to civil and equal rights for individuals, there should be no compromise.  We hope that you will fully support passage of the bill.  Thank you. Robert Evensen and Barry Guthary

Casino Gambling *1 comment

I encourage you to continue to oppose casinos here. It’s fun when you win, but usually you lose which is why casinos can spend so much money on advertising and inexpensive drinks. It can be tragic for those who cannot control their gambling and the unfortunate consequences usually effect family members. There has to be [...]

Tenant/Landlord Issues: Invasions of Privacy *2 comments

Hi Will, I’m curious to know if there is current legislation in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in regards to Tenant/Landlord laws.  On several occasions, I have experienced blatant invasion of privacy from my current Landlord. He has entered my apartment without notice, or warning, only to discover that I am present. I understand that a [...]

invitation to an arts exhibit in State House (today and tomorrow) *1 comment

Dear My Representative,   I sincerely invite you to Zhen Shan Ren Art Exhibit in Doric Hall, State House. It is on exhibition from now-5pm today and 10am-1pm tomorrow.   This arts exhibit beautifully displays the inhumane persecution against Falun Dafa practitioners in China and practitioners’ strong belief.   If you can spare some time [...]

Supporting Health Education

I’ve recently heard from a number of people with concerns about the health education bill, House 3434. I do support the bill, and I am, in fact, a cosponsor. Actually, the bill adds only a very limited reporting mandate for school districts; it does not mandate any curriculum.

Pan Flu and Civil Rights *2 comments

Public health officials have long understood the potential dangers of a new flu virus and have for several years been advocating for a bill (House 108 in this session) that would strengthen our readiness for this emergency. This is a bill that I support and it takes on greater urgency given the emergence of swine flu.

A couple of constituents have recently been in touch with me to urge that everyone be required by law to execute a health care proxy. Your thoughts?

Hi Will, As Faith mentioned in her post, maybe stricter safety precautions and/or regulations coupled with strong parental supervisor may prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

Children falling out of windows *2 comments

Hi, Will. I’m deeply troubled, this morning, that yet another of the commonwealth’s children has lost his life as a result of falling through a window screen.  I really believe it is high time we do something more than warn parents to keep children away from windows.    I’m wondering what it would take to pass [...]

Gender confusion

The house voted today on a pair of gender-related bills that generated a debate full of passion, confusion and irony.  I was in the majority on all three of major votes, but split from some of my friends on two of them.

An unpopular vote *8 comments

I write to explain my recent vote today against the proposal for a National Popular Vote (NPV). I voted in the losing minority in a lop-sided 116 to 37 vote.
