Mystic/Alewife Updates *5 commentsAlewife Update: Flooding and Related Projects *4 commentsA meeting was held in the State House this morning with Commissioner Sullivan of the Department of Conservation and Recreation to review flooding and related priorities in the Alewife area. Alewife Brook Water Quality *1 commentI am interning in Will’s office this summer and recently attended a hearing on sewer flows into Alewife Brook and the Charles and Mystic basins, which provided a helpful status update on projects to improve water quality. The hearing was to extend the variance allowing for a certain level of Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) into [...] Flooding @ Clay Pit *1 commentWill: I was watching you and the selectmen discussing the Clay Pit pond flooding. This may be a stupid idea, but wouldn’t a 2 to 3 foot berm take care of it? This seems about at the level of an Eagle project, a few loads of loam and some grass seed. Am I missing someting [...] Relief for persons with flood damages *1 commentIf you have experienced flood related losses, you should move quickly to start a FEMA relief application — call 800-621-FEMA or go to FEMA’s website. First reflections on the Flood of 2010 *4 commentsI was disappointed by how our regional infrastructure performed during the most recent flooding event. We had both severe sewer backups and severe stormwater flooding in many neighborhoods in my district. While we have made progress over the last few years, it is clear that we have to keep at our efforts. Field Observations of the Flood of 2010 *11 commentsFor those who focus on the details of flood events, here is a collection of data points from my travels around the Alewife and Mystic from Sunday into Tuesday. It is important now that we assemble observations from this event and learn as much as possible. Clarissa Rowe will be convening a meeting of the Arlington-Belmont-Cambridge Stormwater Flooding Board for that purpose. Progress on sewer problems in Winn Brook *2 commentsI had been Selectman in Belmont for only a couple of months, when, in the major June 1998 rain storm, a constituent called me late one night to come see the raw sewage rising out of the sink in his finished basement. The single most immediate priority for flood control is assuring that the Alewife Brook and the Mystic River have the capacity to drain large rainstorms. Recent progress is encouraging. One of the most significant pieces of legislation that we passed in the 2007-8 session was the Oceans Act, which contemplates a science based planning process for the waters along the Massachusetts coast. The Oceans Advisory Commission is seeking input on a draft plan. Summary of a meeting that occurred at the State House (September 25) regarding the status of Department of Conservation and Recreation issues in the Alewife area. For those of you who are following the issue of the Silver Maple Forest, I want to report a small step forward. I am writing to provide an update for those who are concerned about preserving the Silver Maple Forest or Belmont Uplands property. A group met last week with Governor Patrick to discuss the issue. Today the House accepted the final Tidelands bill back from the Conference Committee. After months of quiet negotiations, the “tidelands” issue finally took visible shape in the House of Representatives today. As State Representative, I have been following through on state action priorities developed by the Arlington-Belmont-Cambridge Stormwater Flooding Board, on which I previously served. Discussion of the Tidelands decision which tightened controls on coastal development. Regional transportation planning, educational excellence, health care, environmental protection. |
