Update, June 2010:
House staffing has been worked down to to 495 (excluding the reps), the lowest level since 2005. The only lower level in the last 15 years was in 2004.

Thanks Will for taking the time to not only do the research on this spending but to correctly speak up about it in the context of this economy. I’m all for giving the legislature the tools they need to do do their job, however, it is disheartening to see that the legislature’s budget is double the amount spent on shelters for homeless adults.

What are the legislative expenses, and what is the percentage of each category (e.g., payroll, benefits, travel, etc.)? What falls under “operating expenses”?
